Programs in Business & Management at GW

Accountancy (M.Accy.)

Whether you are interested in auditing, tax, forensic accounting, or management, the Master of Accountancy prepares you for professional certification as a CPA and a successful career in the world’s leading accounting and consulting firms, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. Although no business background is required for entry into the program, students with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from a regionally accredited U.S. university can complete the requirements in one year.

Business Administration (M.B.A.)

Global M.B.A.

During the first year of the two-year program, students work in a cohort to complete a four-module curriculum that incorporates core values of leadership and globalization applied to business and society. A highlight of the coursework is the Consulting Abroad Program (CAP) at the end of the first year, a unique overseas experience that allows students to apply knowledge gained in the classroom to a real-world client relationship. The second year of study is fully flexible, allowing students to choose from 15 areas of specialty to customize the content and experience of the program to their individual professional interests and goals.

Professional M.B.A

The professional M.B.A. is offered in two formats designed for working professionals. The structured, cohort option allows you to experience the first year of the program with the same group of students and is based on a rigorous business foundation with an international perspective. The self-paced option offers the freedom to complete the degree in two to five years. Courses take place weeknights, weekends, or online, and offers study abroad opportunities as well as electives in a variety of areas.

Online M.B.A.

The online M.B.A. program follows the same format and curriculum as the professional M.B.A., but is offered 100% online. The program can be completed in three years and includes an opportunity to participate in a week-long DC residency.

Online Healthcare M.B.A.

The healthcare M.B.A.’s online curriculum provides a practical and flexible path for leaders in healthcare and business to expand their current professional abilities or move into healthcare and business.

World Executive M.B.A.

In an era of unprecedented, ever-accelerating global change, business leaders need to look beyond the core competencies and the fundamental skills of a traditional MBA. In order to drive change, they need the in-depth knowledge, resources, and network to drive global economics, innovation and policy. Our World Executive M.B.A. (WEMBA) builds leaders ready to meet the challenges of this new frontier, preparing them to work across industries, sectors and borders. Through this program, you learn how to develop leadership strengths, inspire your team, and build a bridge between today’s projects and tomorrow’s opportunities.

Business Administration (Ph.D.)

Working with a distinguished faculty, students develop expertise, hone research skills, and learn to contribute as vital members of a dynamic community of scholars. Following coursework in economics, philosophy, statistics, research methods, and a selected field of study, students conduct original research under faculty direction.

Business Analytics (Graduate Certificate, M.S.B.A.)

Complex, large-scale data sets. Countless figures crunched into concise recommendations. Numbers don’t intimidate you, they intrigue you with their potential to unlock business insights. The Master of Science in Business Analytics prepares students for successful careers in helping organizations make better decisions through analytics. Students are provided a deep foundation in the various methodologies and technologies of analytics along with the necessary team and project skills.

Business Information Systems (Graduate Certificate)

This certificate provides an overview of the field of Information Systems, defined as “the study, design, development, application, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems.” Information systems support all aspects of an organization’s operations, management, and decision-making.

Digital Marketing and Communication (Graduate Certificate)

This certificate provides an introduction to the expanding area of digital marketing and communication. As this area is inherently multidisciplinary, the certificate draws from coursework within various sub-disciplines offered by the Marketing Department (marketing management, digital marketing, and integrated marketing communication) as well as coursework in web analytics and information systems offered by the ISTM and Decision Sciences Departments.

Finance (M.S.F.)

The Master of Science in Finance (M.S.F.) program produces leaders in the field of finance and focuses on risk management, financial engineering, banking, corporate finance, and portfolio analysis and management. It builds on a bachelor’s or master’s degree in business administration or other quantitative disciplines and emphasizes both financial theory and quantitative methods in financial management. Although the regular, 24-month, year-round program is recommended, highly qualified students can complete an intensive version of the program in 12 months, including a summer session.

Financial Management (Graduate Certificate)

The Graduate Certificate in Financial Management provides background and training in the financial aspects of three broad principal business functions: (1) obtaining necessary capital, (2) investing the capital in the firm’s assets and operations, with the purpose of ethically maximizing the value to the firm’s owners—shareholders, and (3) distributing the profits resulting from product/service sales to the shareholders. Areas of focus include assessing financial performance, financial planning, determining the best methods of raising capital and the cost of capital, choosing optimal uses of the capital, assessing the performance of the invested capital, and selecting the best method of distributing the earnings to equity holders.

Global Leadership in Teams & Organizations (Graduate Certificate)

Designed for mid- to senior-level executives charged with enhancing organizational development and global competence, the curriculum merges theory, research, and practice, incorporating international company site visits with cultural exchanges in Asia, Europe, and South America.

Government Contracts (M.S.G.C.)

The Master of Science in Government Contracts (M.S.G.C.) program is unique in the world — blending the study of government procurement law and policy taught by the Law School, with a core business curriculum taught by the School of Business. The program is designed to give working professionals the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in the world of federal acquisition and is intended for professionals from a variety of acquisition-related jobs in both government and private industry.

Hospitality Management (Graduate Certificate)

The Graduate Certificate is based on a multidisciplinary approach and provides specialized knowledge in hotel development and management. Its epistemological root is grounded in service management to care for consumers away from homes. The operations aspect focuses on hospitality management functions using different business models, such as management contract, franchise agreement and leasehold.

Human Capital (Graduate Certificate)

The Graduate Certificate in Human Capital provides deep knowledge of the practices and research based disciplines of Human Capital and Human Resource Management. Participants will learn how human capital contributes to the core strategy of an organization. Courses cover key areas associated with human resource competencies as well as knowledge associated with the psychology of people, organizations, and careers. 

Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (Graduate Certificate)

Entrepreneurship as an academic field has broadened its focus from starting a new venture to exploring how one acts more entrepreneurial, takes risks and creatively introduces new innovations and combinations in organizations both large and small. The goal of the certificate is to bring together students from different academic foci to collaborate within classes in the program to learn from each other, discuss new ideas, and hopefully create innovations and businesses. Through the program, students will establish a community that will encourage innovation and creativity throughout the curriculum.

International Business (Graduate Certificate)

The Graduate Certificate in International Business will prepare GWSB students to succeed and lead in today’s global economy. In the certificate, participants will acquire the knowledge to assess and act upon the opportunities and challenges in the global business environment.

International Trade & Investment Policy (M.A.)

The M.A. in international trade and investment policy program trains students in the economics, politics, and history of international trade, as well as econometrics. The program’s distinction is its emphasis on international trade, finance theory, policy, and advanced quantitative analysis involving econometric applications. Students chose a specialty field in economic policy analysis, economic development, international business, or finance.

Investments and Portfolio Management (Graduate Certificate)

The Graduate Certificate provides background and training in the theory and practice of the various methods of investment analysis and selection. Topics covered include risk– reward analysis of security investments, including analysis of national economy, industry, company, and markets, legal environment, active and passive portfolio management techniques, portfolio performance evaluation, as well as practical experience in security selection and portfolio management.

Management Leadership (Graduate Certificate)

Leadership is employed across all organization functions, and thus is the central source of progress and innovation in all organizations. This graduate certificate educates students in the principles of effective leadership.

Management of Techonology and Innovation (Graduate Certificate)

This certificate provides a broad treatment of the body of knowledge defined by the certificate title, management of technology and innovation. The focus is on the management of organizations and the professional workforce involved in conceiving, developing and delivering products and services involving technology of all kinds. The body of knowledge and course content are not limited to information technology.

Marketing and Brand Management (Graduate Certificate)

The exciting area of Brand Management is considered by top executives as a high-demand specialty area of marketing. Students will learn how to strategically manage brands to help their organizations in creating customer value, building loyalty and name recognition strong enough to overcome intense competition in local and global markets. The certificate has a special focus on how organizations design brand identity, manage customer experience, measure/ analyze brand performance, and differentiate brand communication strategies.

Organizational Learning & Change (Graduate Certificate)

One of the largest programs of its kind in the U.S., the certificate provides an in-depth understanding of how a learning focus helps organizations improve their performance and create sustainable change. Coursework can be applied toward GW’s master’s degree in organizational leadership and learning.

Organizational Sciences (M.A.)

The organizational sciences program is based on the premise that for individuals and organizations to succeed — whether in the for-profit, not-for-profit, government, military, service, or manufacturing sectors — they must be ready to think and act in the most effective ways possible. Through organizational management techniques, individuals can learn to quickly solve problems and become leaders. The program provides students with a deep understanding of the interactive relationships among the individual, organization, and environment. Students use the knowledge they gain in these areas to enhance their career prospects in consulting, management, and human resources roles.

Project Management (Graduate Certificate, M.S.P.M.)

The Master of Science in Project Management program, available on-campus or online, is designed to meet the needs of working professionals who want to enhance their ability to integrate complex projects, motivate people, and achieve cost-effective results. The curriculum blends the theoretical and applied study of project management with a foundation in general management principles, and guides students in mastering advanced project management tools and techniques.

Sports Management (Graduate Certificate)

The sport and recreation industry is estimated to be almost $500 billion with over $60 billion derived from professional sports alone. The industry includes the management and marketing of youth to professional sport organizations and athletes as well as sport media, sporting goods, health/sport clubs, and venues. The Sport Management Certificate prepares students to enter all areas of the field with a strong understanding of sport marketing, sport media, sport law, and sport facilities.

Tourism Administration (M.T.A.)

Through classroom and field-based learning experiences, students in the Master of Tourism Administration program are prepared for international management positions in tourism-related fields. Students can pursue a concentration in event and meeting management, hospitality management, sport management, or sustainable tourism management, or can develop an individualized program focusing on areas such as ecotourism or cultural/heritage tourism.

Walkable Urban Development (Graduate Certificate)

The graduate certificate in walkable urban development provides coursework in the practical foundations of walkable urban real estate development and place management. Real estate development in the United States has been transitioning from building and financing single-use properties in the suburbs to building, financing, and managing complex mixed-use projects in walkable urban cores. This certificate provides students with the tools necessary to finance, develop, and manage these emerging communities.
